Toxic or hazardous products contain materials that can threaten human health and the environment when disposed of improperly.  Most households and businesses generate some hazardous waste. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage, down drains, or onto the ground.

When leftover paint, chemical cleaners, and other household products containing dangerous materials are no longer wanted, they become Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).  Hazardous products are often marked with warning labels or cautions because they contain chemicals that may be toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. Be green, San Joaquin, and take them to our Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility:   Our permanent HHW facility accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) free of charge to residents of San Joaquin County only.

    • Medical sharps: The HHW Facility also accepts home-generated medical sharps from residential customers (syringes, hypodermic needles, lancets, and other needle devices for injecting medication or blood tests).  Sharps must be transported in an FDA-approved biohazard sharps container (available from your local drug store or pharmacy).  Ask about our free sharps container exchange.
    • Cooking oil: Recycle your used cooking oil with us!  Used cooking oil or waste vegetable oil is a valuable commodity and should never be poured down the drain.  Please call to make arrangements if you have more than 5 gallons to recycle.
